BEIJING/WASHINGTON, 2 Feb: China today warned US President Barack Obama against meeting Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, saying this would “seriously undermine” Sino-US ties as a row escalated between the two major powers.
“A meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama would seriously undermine the political foundation of Sino-US relations... harm others but bring no profit to itself either,” Mr Zhu Weiqun, Chinese Executive Vice Minister for relations with Foreign Countries said.
The Chinese came caveat on a day Mr Obama proposed a US$7.4m allocation in his annual budget for preservation of the tradition and culture of Tibet in the Tibetan Autonomous Region and other parts of China. Proposing the allocation, the Obama administration, in its annual budget for 2011 sent to the Congress, said this fund be made available to non-governmental organisations to support activities which preserve cultural traditions.
Mr Zhu's today's statement was issued ahead of the Tibetan spiritual leader's 10-day visit to the USA from 16 February. The Dalai Lama is likely to meet Mr Obama during the trip. The Dalai Lama's visit will precede the US tour of Chinese President Hu Jintao, possibly in April.
